Summary
An act to ensures that parents are supported by their children may be amended to allow a third party to invoke it. Right now, the Maintenance of parents Act can be invoked only by parents themselves, who may be reluctant to do so. Minister in the Prime minister's office, Mr Lim, said that there was a need to redouble efforts in public to emphasise the importance of filial piety.
Opinions
1) The Maintenace of parents Act can be invoked only by the parents, but most parents are reluctant to do so. Even if the children do not treat the parents well, the children are still the parent's flesh and blood and I think that the parents do not want the children to have trouble with the law. So, most parents will just have to suffer in silence.
2)As a result of the good health care, people live longer. Many live beyond their retirement age. this become a big problem as lots of money is required to support them.
3)Due to the declining birth rate, most singaporeons have small families. So, the burden of taking care of the parents can only shared within the small family and these children may feel the financial stress in supporting their parents.
4)The goverment trys to alleviate these social problems by extending the retirement age from 55 to 62 and then 65, subsidies medical care by giving special discounts, cheaper transport fare for senior citizens, giving higher interest rate in the ordinary CPF account and invoking the Maintanence of Parents Act.
5) I think teachers and parents play a part in this issue. In school, we can have talks and workshops to educate the children about the importance of filial piety.
6) I tink that it is only right for us, children to support our parents when they are old. They broght us up from young and give us a good education so it is our duty as their children to support them when they are old. I think that those children who does not even support their parents and leave them to their own devices are very irresponsible and curel. They do not even have the heart to take care of their own parents.

News article: Email complaint lands Indonesian mum in jail.
Summary
A mother of two toddlers was detained under a new Electronic Information and Transaction Law after she sent an email message to a group of friends complaining about the poor serice she received at a hospital. The email was passed on to many others, eentually into the hands of Omni International Alam Sutra Hospital, which promptly sued her, accusing her of slander. She was detained on May 13 and thrown into women's prison for three weeks. She faces a criminal court trail and could get up to six year's jail and a 1 billion rupiah fine if convicted. She sent the email in August last year after going to hospital for treatment. In the email, she wrote about her disappointment with the poor service and attitude of the management, and complained about the doctor's skill. But according to the hospital's lawyer, it was not only a claim of poor service. She also claimed that the hospital swindled her. Vice-president Jusurf Kalla said," It's going too far. It's about a trivial matter. They can't put her in jail. They could have put her under house arrest." President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono expressed his concerns and had asked the Attornery-General and national police to look in the case and find a good solution.
Opinions
1) I think it is not right of Indonesia to put the mum in jail. She only wrote a complain letter, saying about her experience in the hospital. She has the right to express her opinions of the hospital. She was only stating a opinion when she said that that she had received poor service from the hospital and was disppointed in the hospital.
2) I agree with vice-president Jusurf Kalla that they have gone to far. The Indonesian has created a storm in tea cup over such trivial matters. It is only a case of a complain letter and yet, they had placed the mum in jail and she might face up to 6 years of jail and a fine of 1 billion rupiah. They could only have sentenced under house arrest for such trivial matters.
3) According to the hospital lawyer, the mum also wrote that the hospital has swindled her. I think it is not right of her to write this. She could have only stated about the facts(About the poor service she received, Poor attitude of staff etc). If she had added in that she was swindled, she was also in the wrong.
4) I think this incident happened as the mum wrote the email to her friends. Her friends then passed it on, and soon, it was a chain message. The message then spread like a wild bush fire. Soon, many people will know about it. Now, when technology is very advanced, we can email others who are at the opposite of the world where we are in a few minutes. Chain messages can also be spread from one person to twenty others within minutes. This is the reason why we can spread chain messages within an hour or two. Some chain messages even scares the receiver by saying that if they don't send the message to a certain number of people, something bad will happen to them. I think sending these chain messages is a complete waste of time. Not only will you scare the receiver, you will also spasm his email.

News article: Driven by greed: Why people fall prey to scams.
People are falling to prey to scams as a result of their own greed. The greed of the victims clouds their better judgement.
Two weeks ago, nine members of a scam 'syndicate' were jailed by a Hong Kong court for tricking 12 victims worldwide into depositing HK$13.88 million into 10 Hong Kong bank accounts. One of the victim was a 27-yearold fund manager. She was told that she had won a HK$45 million lottery. To get the money, she would have to pay up more than $3000,000 as a advance fees. Charmed by the prospect of having a big payday, she paid the money.
Other variations of this trick includes winning a luxury car and winning a lucky draw.
My opinions
1) If only people are not so greedy, the lottery scams can be prevented. Having no greed in one's mind will cause one to have a clear mind to detect a scam. To determine whether it is a scam, one can call up the company to find out whether what the scammer says is true. Even though it is more troublesome, it is better to be safe than sorry. If everyone does this when they receive scam calls, the scammers will be soon "out of buisness".When a person knows about a scam, he or she should immediately call the police to allow the police to catch the those who are behind the scam. By doing this, the scammers will be caught and put behind bars,thus, there will also be lesser victims.
2) I think what the scammers are doing is very wrong. In a economic crisis, like now, there will be more people out of a job. These jobless people will trick others to have money to feed their family.. But what these people did not think of is about the victim's family. The victim may not come from a well-to-do family and the $300,000 may be all that the victim have in the bank account.The scamers are very inconsiderate by not thinking about others and only thinking about themselves.

3)If I were a parent and i just received a phone call telling me that my child has been kidnapped, I would feel panicky and I also fear for the safety of my child. The scammers are also very inconsiderate as they can do anything to earn money, even making an innocent mother worry about her children. To prevent parent to be worry over a scam, when parents receive a scam call saying that their children is kidnap, the parents should stay calm and not panic. Being calm will allow one to think clearly. The parents can call the child. The parents can also call the school to ask whether the child is still safely in school. As a last resort, the parent can also call the child's friend and ask whether their child is with the friend. If the child cannot be located, the parent should seek help from the police immediately.
4) How does scammers know about the child's particulars? It is most likely that scammers get a child's particulars on the web. Nowdays, teeneagers tend to put up their particulars on blogs and msn. To prevent parents from loosing their hard-earned money,schools also play their part by educating the children. We have talks on cyber-awareness in my school. Also, we should not use our full names and place photos of our selves on blogs.
5)In some serious cases of revealing particulars on the net, credit cards are used illegally. I think the scammers gets the credit card number when the owner of the credit card purchases something on the net. There is a certain number of risk involved when we purchase things on the net using our credit card. Thus, the best idea of purchasing something is to buy it directly at the shop. Although it is more troublesome, it is better to be safe than sorry!
So, we should not reveal our particulars on the net .

Shots were fired at an anti-riot van in Athens and youths damaged a police car as 2,000 students marched in new protests after police killed a teenager.
At the start of the march, twelve youths toppled a police vehicle, but the police officers in cars were unscathed.
Earlier , shots were fired at a riot police van in Athens, missing the 23 officers on board but hitting the engine. One of the van's tyres also burst.
A group calling itself "Popular Action" claimed responsibility for the strike.
Youths have targeted police stations and torched police vehicles over the killing of 15-year-old Alexis by a police bullet.
Alexis was fatally shot on December 6 by a police officer who claims he fired into the air while he was under attack by a group of youths.
Opinions
In my opinion, the youyhs should not have shot the riot police's vehicle. Even though the police, gouverment may be in the wrong, but what the youths are doing may injured or even cause the death of the riot police. The riot police are only doing their jobs- to stop riots. Furthermore, the police shot Alexis accidentaly and when you are under attack by a group of youths, you will most probaly miss your target.(In this case, the 'target' is air.) The Singapore flyer experienced a major power disruption, which left 173 passengers stranded for about six hours.
All trapped passengers were able to leave their capsules after the Singapore Flyer resumed rotating at about 11:11pm.
Earlier, a few passengers were lowered down to safety in a sling-like device from one of the observation capsules.
A spokeswoman for the attraction said about 173 people were onboard the wheel when a short circuit in one of the drive motors occurred at around 5:00pm.
Those stranded were provided with drinks and food.
OPINION
Christmas is here and the festive season begins but with a tourist attraction-The Singapore flyer-down, Singapore's tourism rate may go down. Many forigners who were stranded were not very happy with Singapore. the forigners complained that they did not know what was happening. In my opinion, the tourist or even Singaporeons planning to come to the singapore flyer will be down, even after the flyer is fixed and the problem is solved. But the worse hit areas are the resturant round the Singapore flyer. There would not be much people and buisness will be down.

Singapore's AVA has lifted the suspension on the import of milk and milk products from China.
AVA said that following its inspection of dairy farms, milk collection centres and food processing establishments in China, it is satisfied with the control measures in place to ensure that milk and milk products imported from China are not contaminated with melamine. Products produced by approved establishments on or after December 18 will be allowed into Singapore.
AVA has also imposed additional import conditions for such Chinese products.
Suspension of China milk and milk products came into effect on September 19 and AVA has been working closely with the Chinese authorities to resume importing of products while ensuring food safety of products.
AVA said it will continue to monitor the products imported into Singapore.

China will send warships to fight rampant piracy off Somalia after one of its commercial vessels foiled a major attack near the African state. China will send two destroyers and one large supply ship to engage in the upholding of security in international waters off the coast of Somalia.
The fleet will depart from China's south sea naval base on Hainan island after December 25 for a three-month tour of the Somali coast. It will be the first time in modern history that the China's navy has carried out a mission outside Chinese waters.
Pirates have carried out more than 100 attacks in the key shipping lanes of the Gulf of Aden. Last month, the pirates captured the world's attention when they hijacked the Sirius Star, carrying two million barrels of crude oil, and demanded a 25-million-dollar ransom for the boat and its crew. It is one of about 17 ships, including a Chinese vessel, that have fallen into pirate hands.
OPINION
In my opinion, I think it is wonderful that china is taking action and participating. With China’s warship, the pirates may not want to attract too much attention and there would be lesser attacks. If the pirates still attack, the china’s warship will act as an extra ‘security measure’, as there would be more warships on the alert and it would be easier to fight against the pirates.
